WDS Technologies technology and expertise has been chosen by the International Telecommunication Union for its first telemedicine pilot project in Mozambique.

Two central hospitals, one in Maputo (the capital of Mozambique, population 1,132,000) and one in Beira (population 350,000), will be connected by a telemedicine link using the existing telecommunication infrastructure. The establishment of a link between both sites is expected to be beneficial for clinical and educational purposes, and more generally for a spirit of collaboration and exchange between the medical institutions. Doctors will be able to discuss cases that require high-level interpretation. The transmitted images can also be used to obtain a second or third opinion. Last but not least, it will be possible to send the images in advance from one site to the other in order to check if it is necessary to transfer a patient. By avoiding unnecessary transfer, important inconveniences for both patients and the hospitals will be reduced.
The project will use standard low-cost teleradiology equipment from WDS Technologies which provides support for the exchange and visualisation of images including radiographs. It was designed taking into consideration years of study done at the University Hospital of Geneva (Prof. Ratib). The user interface is state-of-the-art but nevertheless remains simple and can be used by any technician or doctor familiar with the widely-known Windows 95/NT operating system after a short introduction time.

Deux hôpitaux centraux, le premier à Maputo (capitale du Mozambique, population 1'132'000) et le second à Beira (population 350'000), seront connectés par un lien de télémédecine utilisant les infrastructures de télécommunication. L’établissement d’un tel lien peut s’avérer bénéfique pour la clinique et l’éducation et plus généralement pour renforcer l’esprit de collaboration entre institutions médicales. Les médecins seront à même de discuter des cas qui nécessitent des compétences élevées. Les images peuvent également être transmises pour obtenir une seconde ou tierce opinion. Finalement, il sera également possible d’envoyer un dossier d’un site à l’autre afin de savoir si le transfert du patient se justifie. En évitant un transfert inutile il est possible de réduire les inconvénients majeurs aux patients, à leurs familles et aux hôpitaux.
Le projet utilisera un équipement de téléradiologie de WDS Technologies qui permet l’échange et la visualisation des documents y compris les radiographies. Ce logiciel a été réalisé en tenant compte des travaux de recherche réalisés notamment à l’Hôpital Universitaire de Genève sous la direction du Prof. Ratib. L’interface utilisateur du système est simple et peut être mis en oeuvre par tout technicien ou docteur familier avec le système d’exploitation Windows 95/NT après un temps d’introduction relativement bref.
